Clean Up and be part of the solution

Every year the Clean Up Australia Day event encourages and inspires thousands of Australians to take to their local park, beach, bushland and streets and really help make a difference to their local environment.

The Member for Greenslopes, Joe Kelly is asking local residents to join the drive on Sunday March 3 to help remove the volume of waste that contributes to the choking of our streets, beaches, parks, bushland and waterways.

"As a community, we can make a difference", said Joe.

The Palaszczuk Government has introduced a container deposit scheme.

“This is a really important achievement. You can ask any local environmental group or regular Clean Up Australia Day volunteers, drink containers are one of the major items picked up from our creeks and waterways,” said Joe Kelly MP.

The scheme makes it easier to recycle plastic drink bottles and aluminium cans, whilst also being designed to allow community groups to use the money returned from container deposits as a source of fundraising income. Individuals can also take part of this initiative.

Since its introduction less than six months ago, the scheme has seen over 102 million containers recycled, returning $15 million to Queenslanders.

The Queensland Government is also developing a new waste management and resource recovery strategy. The strategy will be underpinned by a waste disposal levy. The levy is proposed to commence on 1 July 2019.

“I’ll be helping out on Clean Up Australia Day but I’ll also be working with the Environment Minister to develop sustainable solutions to these problems,” said Joe Kelly MP.
